Fourteen

Later that morning Millie walked along Bond Street with Paris, their maids trailing behind them along with two footmen charged with carrying their purchases to the two carriages they had brought with them on their shopping expedition.

Millie played with the new kid leather gloves she had chosen to wear, a purchase from last week, her mind far away from the occupation with her friend.

Instead, all she could think of was her time with the duke. Their intimate joinings had become something unlike anything she had ever imagined.

Who knew that men and women could enjoy each other so? She certainly had no idea. Her stomach fluttered at the memory of their bath this morning. How she could not wait to join him again or maybe next time he would join her.

They came up to their carriage, and their driver opened the door, assisting them in climbing up. Millie smiled at Paris as they settled their skirts, her friend waiting for the door to close before she uttered a word.

"That is it. I cannot remain quiet a moment longer. You must tell me what is happening between you and the duke. At breakfast this morning, he could not keep from looking at you and the way he looked…" Paris waved her fan before her face. "Well, I'm surprised you did not go up in smoke."

Millie grinned and knew she looked like the cat who jumped into a bowl of cream. "We consummated the marriage again," she said.

Paris chuckled, shaking her head. "You cannot consummate a marriage more than once, but I understand what you're trying to say, and I'm happy for you."

"Thank you," she answered. "When we're alone like that, I feel so close to the duke. I'm hopeful that by making him passionate for me, he will open his heart and fall in love with me."

Paris reached out, squeezing her hand a moment. "I'm certain he will, for how could he not fall in love with you? You're charming and kind and passionate. Everything a gentleman such as the duke would want in a wife."

"Except he never wanted a wife. But I hope he soon reconciles that I'm here to stay and that I'm not so bad after all. That I am, in fact, quite the catch." Millie chuckled at her words, glancing out the window to watch as they passed Hyde Park on their right.

"Your sister's ball is this evening. Do you know if the duke is to attend?"

"I believe so. He has not said that he will not, and she's family now, after all. It would be in bad form if he did not attend."

"And will you continue with your plan this evening too, Duchess?" Paris asked her.

Excitement made her heart beat fast. To think of them stealing away and being alone made her want the hours to pass quickly so she could seduce him again. "Of course. I will ensure my dance card is full and that I'm more than occupied should he not attend. But I'm sure
